Gr 5-9-Readers will delve into hot news topics in this series. Each book kicks off with a current news story before diving into the topic's history, including Supreme Court decisions, legislation, and other pivotal moments. The subject matter is broken down into key points of debate. Voting and Elections thoroughly examines aspects like voter ID laws, gerrymandering, and voter turnout. In Racism, the distinction between interpersonal, institutional, and systemic racism is clarified, along with the consequences of racism in areas such as health care and housing. Overturning Roe v. Wade thoughtfully presents both sides of the debate and their counterarguments. The use of infographics, charts, and maps is particularly effective. Throughout the text, readers are prompted to consider their own perspectives on the material. Back matter includes a quiz, glossary, additional resources, and an index, but no source notes. VERDICT Well laid-out and even-handed, but the lack of source notes is a serious flaw.

Grades 4-8 The Focus on Current Events series (6 new titles) lets readers dig into modern issues and hot-button topics by examining recent events within a broader historical context. The volumes are straightforward and clearly organized, each beginning with an example that readers will likely recognize from the news before walking them through the topic's history through the present. Immigration shares some of the reasons people choose to leave their homelands, the process of legally immigrating to the U.S. (including its challenges), and tough issues, such as deportation. The inclusion of case studies and infographics will help readers synthesize the subjects being presented, while "Think about It" prompts and a final quiz test readers' knowledge and encourage critical thinking. While these issues can be hard to talk about, these books help to educate and encourage honest discussions.
