From Richard Wright, one of the most powerful, acclaimed, and essential American authors of the twentieth century, comes a compelling story of one man's attempt to escape his past and start anew in Harlem.

Cross Damon is a man at odds with society and with himself—a man of superior intellect who hungers for peace but who brings terror and destruction wherever he goes. The Outsider is an important work of fiction that depicts American racism and its devastating consequences in raw and unflinching terms. Brilliantly imagined and frighteningly prescient, it is an epic exploration of the tragic roots of criminal behavior.

Wright, perhaps best known for the classic NATIVE SON, does not disappoint with this title, and JD Jackson's narration transforms the audiobook into a nearly theatrical experience. Cross Damon is a Black man who is struggling to make his way in an unwelcoming world. Only when his life takes a dramatic turn does Damon see an opportunity to break free from society's oppression. Jackson's voice is so versatile, nuanced, and agile that he can shift characters and tone without missing a beat. His delivery is well paced and alive. Indeed, the listener must be willing to coast along on the momentum or be left behind. The result is a solid performance of a challenging novel. Painfully relevant, this production is well worth a listen. L.B.F. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine
