What makes a sport weird? Sports might seem weird because they combine many sports into one game. Maybe people compete underwater or in other unusual places. Or a sport might take familiar activities such as ironing or objects such as milk cartons and twist them in new or extreme ways. Sports can be strange in all kinds of ways. From dog surfing to extreme ironing, dive into some of the wackiest sports in the world and find out how they are played, how they were created, and more.

Grades 3-5 In the Wonderfully Weird series (6 titles), readers will explore the odd and unexpected corners of otherwise common topics. Weird Sports is no exception, providing a plethora of bizarre activities and competitions enjoyed around the world. Readers are introduced to the concept through the world's largest dodgeball game (played in 2012), followed by short themed chapters that focus on four unusual categories: ""Extreme Sports"" (extreme ironing, Yukigassen--a formal snowball fight), ""Playing Underwater"" (bog snorkeling, underwater hockey), ""Sports with a Twist"" (dog surfing, kick volleyball), and ""Sports with Food"" (a giant pumpkin regatta, cheese rolling--a sprint to catch a cheese wheel that's rolling downhill). Photographs illuminate a majority of the examples, which truly must be seen to be believed, and the work concludes by challenging the reader to consider other possible weird sports.
