But Black people and Black culture have not always been represented in positive or accurate ways on screen and in many cases were portrayed by white actors. Learn about the long history of Black representation in entertainment and how increased diversity continues to shape television and movies.

Grades 4-7 Discussing issues of great importance, the Fight for Black Rights series (6 titles) traces Black Americans' past and ongoing struggles for civil rights and equality, and it presents the tools available to help affect change. Diversity and Entertainment examines the opportunities (or lack thereof) available to Black performers on stage, TV, and in film, criticizing racist practices such as blackface but ending on celebratory note of Black achievement and empowerment. Short, clear chapters are accompanied by black-and-white and color photographs and illustrations that show persons and events referred to in the text, with yellow boxes highlighting important individuals and asking readers thoughtful questions to inspire discussions. A time line of events and list of recommended websites and books are included in each title. A well-organized and timely series.

Gr 3-7-The six attractive books in this series take on distinct perspectives in the fight for Black rights. Each book provides a bit of history on its topic then addresses current events and movements. Focused less on statistics, stories that include dates and people are used to bring these books to life. Readers will be excited to read about people they are familiar with and intrigued to research historical figures who are unfamiliar. Personal questions interspersed throughout ask readers to identify what they would do in similar situations. These short books are easy to read and a plethora of colorful photos help readers connect with the text. VERDICT A well-written and beautiful series that brings life to the fight for Black rights.
